SPACE FOR GIANTS IN UGANDA
The Quest to Unleashing Uganda’s Conservation Potential
Space for Giants conserves Africa's wildlife, particularly elephants, and protects their habitats. We focus on sustainable conservation practices in Uganda that benefit wildlife and local communities. Through various initiatives, we enhance Uganda's natural resources' ecological and economic value.
Our initiatives in Uganda.
-
Through our conservation investment platform, we assist the Ugandan government in building a nature-based economy. This initiative transforms protected areas into engines for revenue generation, facilitating public-private partnerships (PPPs) that promote sustainable tourism and conservation-compatible investments.
-
The Giants Club is a unique forum compromising influential African leaders and business figures dedicated to restoring and protecting Africa’s ecosystems. In Uganda, the committee includes key agencies such as the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), the Ministry of Water and Environment (MoWE), the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MTWA), the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), and the National Forestry Authority (NFA). Our focus areas include:
Co-management of Uganda’s protected areas
Development of ecotourism concessions
Promotion of new investment opportunities in Uganda’s protected areas network
-
In August 2022, we signed a historic co-management agreement for the Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve (PUWR) with UWA, 9 local district governments, and Karimojong Overland Safaris (KOS). This agreement marks the first of its kind in Uganda, paving the way for private-sector investment in conservation. Our collaborative management approach aims to protect and restore the reserve while driving conservation rewards to the local communities.
-
Our commitment to wildlife justice involves enhancing the capacity of judicial officers, prosecutors, and investigators in Uganda. Since 2016, we have trained over 1,000 wildlife and environmental law participants, focusing on effective prosecution and judicial processes. We collaborate with crucial Ugandan institutions to strengthen legal frameworks and combat illegal wildlife trade.
-
The Human-Elephant Coexistence Program addresses the growing challenges of human-wildlife conflict in Uganda, particularly between local communities and elephants. As populations expand and habitats shrink, our initiatives focus on innovative solutions that promote peaceful coexistence. We aim to reduce crop damage and enhance livelihoods by constructing electric fences, engaging the community, and promoting education while fostering positive attitudes towards elephant conservation. By empowering communities with the tools and knowledge to coexist with wildlife, we strive to create a sustainable, harmonious future where people and elephants thrive together.
-
We are actively promoting ecotourism as a means to generate revenue for conservation. Our initiatives include:
Conducting an assessment of gorilla tourism potential in partnership with UWA and NFA
Developing a Tourism Investment Prospectus for PUWR
Launching new rounds of ecotourism concessions to attract high-value investments
Through these programs, Space for Giants is committed to fostering a sustainable future for Uganda’s wildlife and natural resources, creating a harmonious balance between conservation and community development.
