campaigns and stories

We strive to tell conservation stories creatively through our global campaigns and journalism outreach

Our global communications and campaigning aims to bring stories of the threats facing elephants and their landscapes to as many people as possible. We partner with African conservation journalists, international advertising conglomerates, computer games developers, and world-famous individuals, all with the aim of spreading the message as wide as possible.

AFRICAN JOURNALISM

We understand that we can bring millions of critically-important new supporters to our cause if we explain our work and why we do it more comprehensively in the countries where we work. In Africa, ‘conservation’ is often misunderstood, opening the door to confusion and opposition. With the Giants Club African Conservation Journalism Fellowships, we mentor specialist reporters working for Africa’s leading media outlets, to widen and deepen coverage about this key issue.

Increasing human settlement and activity is encroaching on what used to be relatively wild areas. In places, this happens on elephant migration paths, increasing the chance of human-elephant conflict. By fitting elephants with collars carrying chips linked to satellites, we can map their movements and advise authorities of areas with the highest wildlife densities. This informs policy, and makes it easier for wildlife and people to continue to live alongside each other.

Safari Central, which brings virtual versions of real animals to life using Augmented Reality (AR). Using our collar data, they created a virtual version of an elephant we monitor called Mweturia. The first AR Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition raised money for us but also reached new audiences: more than two billion people play online or computer games.

STAMPEDE OF SOUND

Chic ft. Nile Rodgers headlined this eclectic, intimate, and exclusive gathering of live music acts at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York in November. As well as raising funds, this pioneering event firmly introduced Space for Giants to new supporters and media in the United States, and raised the profile of our approach of demonstrating conservation value as well as protecting elephants.
